NSDL Annual Meeting

From Digital Libraries to Cyberlearning

The 2009 NSDL Annual Meeting will be held on November 17-19 at the Marriott at Metro Center in Washington DC.

In 2008, the NSDL Annual Meeting highlighted activities that are pushing the boundaries of digital libraries by finding ways to weave together learning and technology in our highly connected world.  Presentations also underscored the challenges of working within the evolving national infrastructure while producing real results in the classroom. For 2009, we will continue building on this transition from library to learning. The six categories for presentations include: Evaluation & Impact, Outreach & Professional Development, Research Findings, Sustainability, Services & Technology and Collection Development.  The overall structure of the meeting will be the same as last year, starting with the poster reception on the evening of the 17th, and ending the meeting by noon on the 19th. The Pathways PIs and staff will hold a separate meeting on the day of the 17th. Leading up to the meeting, we will also be presenting some sessions via ReadyTalk, including an orientation for new staff and projects, and other presentations that will help us all hit the ground running at the meeting.

Thanks to everyone for a great meeting!

Call for Posters

Poster Registration is now closed.

The NSDL Annual Meeting Planning Committee encourages poster submissions from new, continuing, and past NSDL-funded projects; from NSDL partner institutions; and, from related NSF-funded programs and projects. The primary purpose of the poster session is to provide opportunities for informal discussions with colleagues about project developments that are of interest to the NSDL community and to reflect where appropriate the 2009 NSDL Annual Meeting theme FROM DIGITAL LIBRARIES to CYBERLEARNING.

To Register a Poster: Prospective poster presenters are required to submit a short abstract (no more than 200 words) and other information describing their poster. This is a registration rather than review process; however, the planning committee reserves the right to reject inappropriate submissions or those exceeding the one poster per project limit. All poster registrations are due by 19 October 2009. We will not guarantee space for posters that are not registered by the deadline.

PLEASE NOTE: In order to accommodate the anticipated volume of posters, each project will be allotted one 4 x 4 foot square space on a display board, which will be shared with another poster. Wireless internet access will be available; however, all computers and other equipment are the responsibility of the poster presenters. Poster numbers will be assigned following the registration deadline.

Poster Design Suggestions

Poster Preparation

  • Each assigned poster space will measure 4'h x 4'w which includes a border of approximately 1" (2.5cm).
  • The top of the board should consist of a large, easy-to-read title of your program, including name(s) and affiliations(s). We suggest that title lettering be about 2" to 3" (5cm to 7.5cm) with subheadings 0.5" to 1" high (1.25cm to 2.5cm).
  • All lettering should be legible from 5' (1.5m) away. The minimum type size for text should be no less than 18 point, but 24 point (0.25", .625cm) is preferable.
  • Handouts and other give-away materials are appreciated by poster viewers.
  • Push-pins will be available in the poster area on a first-come, first-served basis. We recommend that you bring your own to ensure availability. Velcro holds poster material well. All material must be removable.
  • Do not write, paint, or use paste on the display board.
  • A large and/or bright center of interest can draw the eye to the most important aspect of the poster. Use color to add emphasis and clarity.
  • Make illustrations simple and bold. Enlarge photos to show pertinent details clearly. Use elements of different size and proportions. Convert tabular material to graphic display, if possible.
  • Leave some open space in the design.

Poster Content Might Include

  • Title of the project, researcher names and affiliations.
  • Major activity or research of the project.
  • Project approach, plan of action or method.
  • Major expectations, findings, lessons learned or product developed.
  • Benefits the project to the overall NSDL.
  • Opportunities for current or future training or technical assistance for NSDL grantees.
  • Project publications, websites developed or suggested readings that might be useful to NSDL grantees.

Project Updates

Project Updates

Use this section to enter a project update for your NSF-funded grant under the National STEM Distributed Learning (NSDL) program, both current as well as past projects  -  applies to Pathways I, Pathways II, Services, Targeted Reseach, Small grants, or projects funded under the Collections track of NSDL.  Give your colleagues an overview of your project activities, development, and current status!

In order to have the most comprehensive collection of project updates in time for the Annual Meeting, please submit your information by November 10, 2009.

Project Updates will continue as a permanent feature of the NSDL Community Network after the Annual Meeting (Nov 17-19, 2009), so that NSDL projects can submit updates on a regular basis (e.g. quarterly, every six months) to keep the NSDL community apprised of project developments, accomplishments and kudos, portal or software releases, outreach activities, etc. While not obligatory, the Resource Center encourages you to use this method of keeping the community in the loop about your NSDL project.

Session Proposals: General Information

Session submissions closed on August 28, 2009.

From Digital Libraries to Cyberlearning

In 2008, the NSDL Annual Meeting highlighted activities that are pushing the boundaries of digital libraries by finding ways to weave together learning and technology in our highly connected world.  Presentations also underscored the challenges of working within the evolving national infrastructure while producing real results in the classroom. For 2009, sessions explore issues and report on activities building on this transition from library to learning. The six categories for presentations include:

Evaluation and Impact:  Focus on efforts and results to measure the effects of NSDL in real educational settings, and to document impacts as observed from the STEM teacher and learner audiences of NSDL projects;

Outreach and Professional Development: Outline models, research or designs of activities implemented that promote the use of NSDL in alignment with instructional practice;

Research Findings: Present cumulative experiences and compelling narratives about ongoing, or concluded, research (e.g., technology, education, policy) within the context of the NSDL goals to support effective usage of library materials;

Sustainability: Describe strategies for sustaining your work within a broader vision for NSDL while keeping pace the evolving national STEM research and education infrastructure;

Services and Technology: Demonstrate tools and technology developed to enable the creation and adoption of digital materials tailored for use with today’s learners;

Collection Development: Advance the craft of digital library building by presenting strategies and software for library building, working with standards, archiving and other library tools needed to ensure the utility and integrity of library collections.

Session Lengths & Formats

The following session types will be available for the 2009 meeting: Panels, Presentations, Computer Lab, and Lightning Talks:

  1. Panel or Presentation, up to 30 minutes: This time would support an update on several facets of one project's activities, or several projects could report on related activities.
  2. Panel or Presentation, up to 60 minutes: This time would support a panel presentation comprising several perspectives on an issue or an in-depth examination of one significant issue.
  3. Computer Lab: These sessions do not have to follow a specific format, though we ask that proposals describe an engaging and interactive session, resulting in tangible outcomes for participants. Possible session formats could include workshops or training on tools and technology, or hands-on demonstrations of site features or activities. We do not plan to provide computers this year unless specifically requested by the presenter, since most attendees bring their personal laptops to the meeting.
  4. Lightning Talk: Lightning talks are 5-minute presentations on any topic and are a great way to quickly share detailed information. The style is informal, focused, informative, and can be as prepared or as spontaneous as the presenter chooses.
